Roots Academy is developing the Essentials, a 9-month self development program for university students and early career professionals, tailored to their needs, schedules, and challenges. The program is in an alpha, pilot year, being delivered to 20 Islamic societies from universities nationwide.
Context
As Roots grows as an organization, we have accumulated a large number of students who are keen to interact with us and learn more. One of our new goals is to organize a student retreat in the near future. We require an individual to take on this task and work with other teams to plan, organize and execute this.
 
Job Summary
We are looking for a Student Retreat Manager to be responsible for handling our student retreat projects. You will work closely with all sub teams to ensure effective planning and execution of a retreat for 2022.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Organizing sub team members to support in the planning of a student retreat
  • Organize regular meetings with those involved in student retreat
  • Provide regular updates to management team about progress
  • Plan and execute student retreat for 2022
 
Requirements
  • Previous experience in project management (Not essential)
  • Experience in leading project teams of various sizes and see them through to completion
  • Ability to complete projects in a timely manner
  • Personal organisational and time keeping skills
  • Experience with notion, slack and google drive (Not essential)

Commitment: This is a new role and therefore we don’t have an accurate time description. Would estimate 2-5 hours a week.

Context

Our marketing team currently consists of two team members who have been running social media, email-marketing and poster design. As over the next 12 months our primary focus is on perfecting our curriculum, rather than publicity, the main forms of marketing will be e-mail marketing to a select group of students (approx 500), with limited marketing to a wider audience through social media for “Roots Conversations” – our podcast directed at university students and professionals with scholars and mentors.

Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic sister or brother who will be a part of running digital marketing campaigns for Roots Academy with a specific focus on email marketing.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Co-develop a wider marketing strategy and direction with the Marketing Team
  • Design/write automated email chains and one off-conversion focused emails using Mailchimp/Moosend.
  • Foster and contribute to the bank of material (quotes, ayaat, hadith) to aid in writing email and social media posts/captions.
  • Liaise with the Design team to generate graphics for emails.
  • Assisting with social media marketing campaigns and writing cohesive emails to further boost reach.
  • Attend weekly meetings and input into the project’s wider remit: video reviews, curriculum, strategy, etc.

  • An interest in marketing and a desire to make an impact through your skills and time.

Context

Roots Academy’s Essentials Program is a 9-month, comprehensive learning program that changes how Muslim adults learn and study their faith. 

Job Summary

We are looking for keen video editors responsible for editing and fine tuning videos for our upcoming courses as well as amending errors on formerly released content. You will work closely alongside your video editing colleagues to ensure projects are released with consistent designs and are achieving the production target set by the Roots executive team.

You will also be obligated to provide updates on editing progress as well as be open to feedback and constructive criticism from a plethora of members of the video production/testing teams.

Responsibilities

  • Liaising with cinematography colleagues to produce consistent, parallel designs and ensure production quality is upheld.
  • Providing status reports for the collective Roots meetings
  • Reviewing material and rectifying any observed errors

Required Skills

  • Familiar with Final Cut Pro X and/or Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Optional fluency in use of After Effects with ability produce animated content
  • Basic Video editing skills with particular expertise in the following:
    • Basic trimming and video formatting
    • Ability to use multi-camera editing
    • Callouts, Text overlays and animation
    • Use of Green-screens

Roots conversations is on all major podcast streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google and more. Job Summary We are looking for an individual with an eye for detail to manage the podcast hosting and distribution platform. Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • uploading and distributing new episodes
  • monitoring analytical performance
  • reporting back to leads
  • quality assurance
  • related ad-hoc duties
  • There is no past experience provided though we are looking for someone with attention to detail.
  • Full training will be provided on podcast hosting

Job Summary

We’re looking for someone who cares about holistic tarbiyah, believes in Roots Academy’s mission, and is proactive. The current setup for ISOC engagement is very basic, so it will be up to the two engagement leads to devise a strategy and execute using their experience and initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be the point of contact for ISOC leaders; answer questions on the ISOC-Roots Whatsapp group  to the best of your ability and engage them on a 1-1 basis
  • Maintain and track a document the status of each ISOC, and ensure they have publicised each course and are engaging their members
  • Collect ideas and best-practices from how the different ISOCs are sharing/releasing the courses to their members
  • Support ISOCs in implementing the Essentials curriculum as part of their educational plan (light-touch support. We are not in the business of training ISOCs)
  • Be the “Voice of the ISOC” within Roots Academy – conveying the ISOCs’ needs, pain points, how they’re using our content, etc.
  • Work with the community/feedback team to collate feedback and help us continuously improve

Shaykh Muhammad Shafi Chowdhury

Shaykh Muhammad Shafi Chowdhury graduated from one of the oldest Islamic seminaries in the UK where he studied Islamic sciences with Isnad (unbroken chains of transmission to classical masters) in the fields of Qur’anic recitations and exegesis, Hadith studies and narration of the six canonical texts, Fiqh, Aqeedah, and Arabic Language.

 

He has been involved in extensive community work and teaching maintaining an open minded approach and building bridges between communities. He is an easy to approach scholar that works at grass-roots level.

Mustafa Razzak

Mustafa completed his Pharmacy degree from Aston University, a BA in Islamic Law from the European Institute of Human Sciences, and an MA in Islamic Studies from Newman University. His classical Islamic studies have been mainly with scholars in the UK.

Shaikh Zahed Fettah

Zahed completed his LLB Law degree from the University of Birmingham, a BA in Sharī’ah Law from the European Institute of Human Sciences, and an MA in Islamic Studies from Newman University. He then completed two years of specialisation in Usūl al-Iftā in the Ḥanafī legal school. His classical Islamic studies were mainly with scholars in the UK and Algeria, and he holds ijāzahs in various books of Aqīdah, Hadīth, Fiqh, and other Islamic sciences. He is currently a teacher and researcher in Islamic Studies.

Hisham Jafar Ali

Roots Academy’s first instructor. He is the Muslim Chaplain at the University of Nottingham and has been teaching Arabic & Islamic studies for the last 7 years. Having studied Arabic and the Islamic Sciences in the UAE, he received a higher license and ijazah (traditional licenses) to teach various Islamic sciences.
