Frequently Asked Questions

The Roots Essentials courses are currently running in 12 sites across the UK, and have partnered with 15 Islamic Societies to deliver these. Our largest class has 240+ students attending every week, and we reach close to a thousand students annually.

We believe that truly transformative education takes place in a physical learning environment. It is for this reason that our focus has been on establishing our physical locations, and we will continue to prioritise this. That said, we acknowledge that not everyone can access our classes, and we hope to one day have a full fledged on-demand (& possibly live online) offering when our resources allow us to deliver on this with excellence, and without compromising on our core focus.

Yes! Our first ever summer retreat last year was a great success as a supplement to the in-class learning delivered throughout the rest of the academic year. We believe that there is something unique to be gained from spending a weekend away in good company, and surrounded by nature reflecting on the signs of Allah.

As we grow, the running of multiple sites comes with increasing demands and strain on our existing operation. A limited budget also holds us back in the quality of our output. Funds would allow us to:

  • Pay for the design, development, and editing costs for the remaining Essentials courses
  • Hire part-time employees And contract out work to better manage our workload (we are currently a team of 40+ volunteers)
  • Deliver regular and better teacher training
  • Market our courses to a wider audience
  • Invest in technology and tools to make our classrooms more engaging and develop a community
  • Deliver retreats for all our students

We want to make our lessons accessible to all by removing any obstacles that may prevent some from attending. Many of our students have never attended an Islamic course before, and some are even of other faiths (or of no faith), but for one reason or another they managed to find their way in to one of our classrooms. We believe that keeping our courses free is a key enabler in continuing to reach this audience.

We are committed to not relying solely on donations and are exploring other avenues to becoming financially sustainable, however this will require some time.

No, we are a non-profit company registered with companies house. This model allows us to operate in a way that is appropriate for our organisation.
