What the NHS Maternity Inquiry Teaches Us About the Value of Mothers in Islam

“

If you’ve seen the news recently, you’ve probably come across reports about the inquiry into NHS maternity care. Families shared heart-wrenching experiences of avoidable harm, miscommunications, and a system that, at times, failed to support women when they were at their most vulnerable.

No matter your walk of life, these findings raise an important question.

How do we truly value mothers?

Allah reminds us of the sacrifices mothers make in the Quran:

“His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents.”

(Qur’an 31:14)

These verses don’t romanticise motherhood. They acknowledge and validate its physical, emotional and mental challenges.

One of the most well-known narrations of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH is:

“

“Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers.”

(Authenticated by scholars including al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami no. 1248.)

Islam doesn’t honour mothers because they’re perfect. It honours them for what they sacrifice.

Knowing this, we should revisit the inquiry and ask ourselves, are we doing the best for new mothers? Are we giving them the compassion they deserve?

How can we apply this in our own lives?

1

Many Muslim students are studying nursing, medicine, midwifery, or other allied health professions.

Treating patients with compassion and care are acts of worship when done with sincerity and excellence.

2

Even students outside healthcare can reflect on how we speak about mothers, support women around us, and advocate for systems that protect the vulnerable.

3

Lastly, for those of us who are still blessed with our mothers, we should treat them with the utmost kindness and care.

The UK’s maternity investigation is ultimately a call to do better and, in a world where many mothers have felt unheard, Islam offers a timeless reminder. Every woman deserves dignity, every mother deserves honour, and every act of compassionate care carries immense value in the sight of God.
