How to Reconnect with Allah – Overcoming The Post-Ramadan Blues

Why am I sad that Ramadan is over?

Finding yourself feeling sad after Ramadan has ended is common after experiencing such a spiritual high, and embracing that sadness shows your heart is still alive. Getting that closeness back to Allah may seem difficult when your prayers are less frequent, and you spend your time on mindless worldly activities. Having the desire to return to that closeness is a great start toward improving your relationship with Allah. To be successful in getting closer to Allah after Ramadan and not succumning to post-Ramadan depression, you are the one who can make that change.

1. Make the first step in reconnecting with Allah

Getting close to Allah may seem out of reach. But in reality, it is as simple as making the first step. This can look like a sincere intention, giving up something for the sake of Allah or reading the Quran. Once you take the first step, it’ll make the rest seem more attainable, and you can begin your journey in seeking closeness to Allah.

The Prophet (PBUH) Said
“Take one step toward Me, and I will take ten steps toward you. Walk toward Me, and I will run toward you.”

Sahih al-Bukhari (7536)

This hadith clearly states the impact our efforts have in gaining a closer relationship with our Lord and highlights that our efforts will not go unnoticed.

2. Be completely open and transparent in our du’a

Change is successful when it is gradual rather than sudden. To attain closeness to our Lord, we need to start small and work our way up from there. The most important element of change is cleansing our hearts and making sure we get rid of any diseases of the heart. Making supplication (dua) is a great way to fix this, as it allows you to communicate with Allah and seek his guidance in all matters of our lives. A dua you can implement into your daily routine is this:

Du’a to keep the heart firm
يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ

Transliteration: Ya Muqallibal-quloob, thabbit qalbi ‘ala deenik.

Translation: “Oh turner of the hearts (Allah, the Most High), keep my heart firm on your religion”

[At-Tirmidhi]

Constantly making this dua patiently can change your intentions to ensure sincerity in your actions. This will allow you to get closer to Allah.

3. Perform plentiful good deeds, no matter how small they may seem

Find something to do that is pleasing to our Lord and make sure it is only between you and Allah. Completing a good deed in secrecy allows you to humble yourself before your Lord and prevents you from falling into the trap of doing good because people are watching.

This can be:
  • Asking for forgiveness (Istighfar)
  • Remembering Allah throughout your day (Adhkar)
  • Watching an Islamic lecture or talk
  • Cleaning a space without anyone’s knowledge

Making this an active part of your life will allow you to remember Allah and thank Him in private, making your good deeds much more special.

4. Learn the 99 names of Allah

Would you fall in love with someone if you knew nothing about them? If we don’t know our Creator, how can we say that we truly love Allah? We all view Allah differently, based on what we think He can and can’t do, but the more you learn about Allah, the more likely you are to remember that our Lord is so much more than what the human mind can comprehend. It is our responsibility as Muslims to seek out knowledge and educate ourselves on who our Creator is to the best of our abilities. As you deepen your knowledge of Allah, you’ll naturally grow closer to Him. His 99 names reflect His attributes and understanding them, such as being the Most Merciful, will help you recognise the blessings in your life, strengthening your connection to Him.

5. Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH)

If you want to be someone who loves Allah and is close to Him, act like someone who is. In this case, that would be the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Find out what the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spent his time doing, look at how he would act and follow in his footsteps. There is no better person to follow if you want to gain closeness to Allah.

Surah Al-Imran (3:31)
‘Say, [O Muhammad], “If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”‘

Final thoughts

Overall, attaining closeness to Allah requires sincerity, patience, tenacity and knowledge. This closeness relies solely on you, because no one is going to do it for you. The good news is that Allah is always willing to accept your efforts, and if you put your trust in him and genuinely try, there is nothing Allah cannot do.
